Rawlings in Romania

Friday, October 14, 2005

Hey again. The feast of Iasi is going on, which means the streets are full of people and vendors. We've had a great time shopping. Yesterday I went to Vaslui with Catalin and Alex from Alternative Sociale. Judge Aurel Dublea of the Iasi Court of Appeals drove us, and we met with judges, prosecutors, and the chief of the police inspectorate to discuss the new juvenile court they're launching in Vaslui. On the way back we passed gypsy (Roma) villages, with their huge houses featuring multiple towers. As I understand it, they do not actually live in these houses but build them as "showpieces."
