Rawlings in Romania

Hi. We've been gone for a few days but, as you can tell from the photos, it's been a great trip. We started off heading west to Targu Neamt and arrived just in time late Friday afternoon to climb to the top of the mountain and see Cetate Neamtuilui, or Neamt Castle. Saturday we left and drove for several hours, often along secondary, pothole-filled roads, to finally arrive in Sighisoara. Sighisoara is a walled mountain citadel, the best-preserved medieval city in Europe. As it's late, for more info I'll refer you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sighi%C5%9Foara . They had a great history museum, a torture chamber, a beautiful 13th-century church that is still in use, and good hotels in ancient buildings. Sunday we drove on to Rasnov Castle. We actually tried to go to the more famous -- or, rather, the more hyped -- Bran Castle, but it closed just before we arrived. Rasnov was a more than adequate substitute, another 13th-century fortress affording a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. We ended up in Poina Brasov, a luxury ski resort town in the mountains, where it snowed. Will and Charlie, of course, loved that more than any part of the trip! We had a good snowball fight Monday morning before beginning the five-hour drive back to Iasi.
